Homesteaders of the Prairie

Homesteaders of the Prairie
Hope you had a fabulous weekend. This was a weekend I'll long remember. Early Friday, Leslie and I headed east to Illinois to attend several absolutely wonderful shows. 36 hours later we returned home with a car full of primitive treasures and heads full of all the beautiful, carefully gathered and displayed things we'd seen and the sweet people we met.
The weather was beautiful but brisk and we were glad we didn't have to wait too long for the show to open. Once the doors opened the fun began and the booths quickly filled with avid antiquers. Since many of the antique booths also contained original handcrafted works, I didn't take many photos here but the vignettes were lovely.
And as we were passing through the aisles I recognized blogging friend Patti from Winding Vine Wanderings, creator of the most beautiful pillows and samplers. After following her blog for so long it was very fun to meet her in person.
After shopping our little hearts out at Homesteaders and the Country Spirit show in Arcola we stopped at Las Cuzuelas for a late dinner, then headed back to the motel and collapsed.
Chicken Tostada-Yum!
There were more shows to see, though so we were up bright and early Saturday and headed back to Arthur for A Gathering on the Prairie. Leslie had run into Sharon Clymer from American Harvest Antiques the night before and quickly headed back to their booth while I meandered around, visiting
Darlene Lesicko
Stone Fruit
The Paddy Wagon
Love the Under the Stairwell Cabinet
Outback Antiques
This Went Home with Me
Country Love
Bell's Antiques
American Harvest
By George
and others...

Whew! Please forgive me if I've misattributed any of these displays. I tried to take notes as I went along but you know how that goes. I'll post more photos of some of my finds in another post.

Platte City Antique Show

And a beautiful day it was! We have been blessed with wonderful fall weather. The Platte City Antique show is held in the high school and there is usually quite a line of people waiting to get first dibs on the goodies, so a warm fall day was appreciated! As you enter the school the main hallway is lined with vendors with more set up in the cafeteria and gymnasium. My eagle eyed friends quickly pointed out an army blanket which I snapped up. Seems to be getting harder to find those around here!
There are a variety of antiques and collectibles for sale. I guess this little dress caught my eye because I never had a little girl to costume for Halloween. I always sewed my boys' costumes and made clowns, dinosaurs, pirates and Power Rangers, but no dresses. That's probably why I turned to doll making!
Brenda Kilgore of Farmhouse Collection had a beautiful booth full of naturals, handcrafts and vintage goods. I couldn't pass up one of her dried sunflowers and a couple of her wax pumpkins and they were the perfect addition to my yelloware bowl.
How many pumpkins do you have to have before your considered a "hoarder"? This little bench also came home with me and will hold a birdhouse or two in my new herb garden come spring.
Hope your weekend was filled with lovely times as well! Now, back to the craft room for me.

Simply Primitives Time!

A big Thank You to all who have entered my giveaway! I'm responding to all comments but I'm also taking time to visit your blog and get to know you so it may take me a couple of days to acknowledge your entry. I've enjoyed visiting everyone's blogs and love, love, love the quotes! It seems like autumn gets everyone's creative juices flowing! Still time to enter--see the details on my sidebar!
Here's a peak at my offerings on this month's Simply Primitives site:
Pumpkin Stack Pillow-Sold
Mousie in JOL
Crafty Cat Witches
There's so many wonderful patterns available for fall and Halloween that it's hard to choose what to do next. Thanks to Jan Goos, Brenda Gervais and Pineberry Lane for these designs.
Here's the goodies I found at the Old Summit Antique show last weekend.
Bittersweet from Jenny to add to my dried gourds. I hope the cats don't discover this! Jenny's extension agent said the bittersweet grown here isn't toxic to pets but I don't want to test that statement.
I'm so happy I grabbed this at the first vendor's booth! I have several document boxes but none with floral stenciling.
I bought this for the wonderful frame, but the farm scene from an old plat book is pretty charming. If you click on the photo you can see the details in the print, including a mom pushing her baby buggy across the field!

Antiquing!

Hope you are having a wonderful weekend. Mine has been pretty fun, especially since it included antiquing with friends Leslie, Jo and Ginger yesterday! First on our agenda was the Old Summit County Antique show in Lee's Summit, Missouri.
River Cabin Antiques from Holts Summit, MO
I think this was one of their best shows yet. Many returning vendors, but some new ones too that keep things fresh. Ever mindful that we are approaching the 10th anniversary of 9/11, Mary and Bob from River Cabin Antiques dressed their booth in patriotic bunting.

Their mustard colored walls were the perfect backdrop for a variety of very fine primitives. Leslie debated between a couple of pantry boxes, finally settling on a round one with old black finish.
"Old Friends" from Lamar and Joplin, MO
I loved the seasonal decorations that were tucked in among the inventory. Even the decoys sported a bit of fall finery.

Wonderful Primitives (Pepsi Not Included)
All that shopping made us hungry and our favorite place for lunch in Lee's Summit is Johnny Ray's, an authentic diner that serves amazing steakburgers.

After fortifying ourselves for another round of shopping, we headed east to Greenwood, a tiny gem of a town with several wonderful shops and malls. Our first stop was Old Glory. We loved Vicki's new entry.
Greenwood Mercantile is packed with wonderful booths and vendors include Maggie Bononomi and wool maven Anita White. We really enjoyed Janelle Carey's whimsical touches.
"Edgar, Allen & Poe"

Note Well Dressed Skeletons with Bow Ties
My finds included an old pine picture frame, lots of bobbins for crafting, an old army blanket and a tole box with wonderful paint. I'll share photos in my next post!

Bingham-Waggoner Antique & Craft Show

Last Saturday I once again had to privilege to take part in this fun show. When Leslie and I started doing the show several years ago our booth was right across from the kettle corn guy. Sometimes his little boy would help with sales. We've moved to a shadier spot, but the kettle corn guy is still there and now that little boy is taller than dad and has facial hair. Of course, we look just like we did when we started doing the show.

We were lucky enough to have a beautiful day. The heat index has been over 100 here, but Saturday dawned warm, but comfortable with a slight breeze.
The turnout was really good and it's always fun to catch up with old friends at the show. Here crafty friend Dana of The Stone Rabbit models her preferred shopping attire.

Leslie and Jo brought some awesome primitives...
I got a few things done...
Shoppers enjoyed partaking of walking tacos...
and were entertained by wandering musicians and dancers.

It's a rite of summer for me. What events speak of summer to you?

Old Summit Country Antique Show

The show with the name I can never remember, but it is definitely worth going to. I scooted over to this show as soon as my last wonderful class at Primitives of the Midwest ended last Saturday. So much excitement for one day!

Ginger and Leslie's booth looked wonderful, as usual.

Romantic Vignette
Cloche Made By Ginger's DH, Ronnie
I found lots of great sewing treasures. These all came from different vendors, but now they'll get to mingle and share stories of their unique histories.
Cool Spools in Cool Old Box
Machine Oil Can & Embossed Tin Pin Holder
Just Shabby Enough to be Charming
And I have a sad story of the one that got away. On my first past through I spotted an adorable concrete mushroom with a wonderful patina. I hesitated, thinking I'd make my rounds and return if it still called to me. Well, I completed my rounds and decided it was definitely a treasure I couldn't leave without so I started back towards the booth, only to pass another shopper heading towards the door with that wonderful mushroom! I'm sure she'll enjoy it even more after I told her I was just on my way back to get that very item. When will I learn I'm not the only one with a thing for old concrete?
