Early Work Mercantile Update

Early Work Mercantile has been updated for October! I hope you'll drop by and see what everyone is offering this month.
It was 16 years ago this month that we adopted Cookie, our little mustachioed kitty. This cat definitely has nine lives. Her previous owners moved away and left her as a kitten to fend for herself and she managed to survive. She has survived several mysterious illnesses (cats never tell you what's hurting them) and if you follow my blog you know we thought we were going to lose her earlier this year when she stopped eating for several days. Now she is blind and pretty disoriented and, since they don't make kitty Depends we find ourselves carrying her to her litter box several times a day. She's really not the cat she used to be but I can't bring myself to let her go. I thought it would be easier because we've never had a cat who enjoyed such a long life, but it's not. She still enjoys eating and purrs when we pet her, but spends the rest of the time sleeping. How do you know when the time has come to say goodbye?

Ughhh...I feel for you. Such a sweet, pretty kitty. I don't have any answers for you - I really don't think that I could do it. Give her lots of love and pettings!

I had to make that decision with my little chihuahua, it so hard but you have to be the grown up and figure if their quality of life isn't enjoyable... Then you are keeping them going for you and not them. It was the hardest decision and I cried like a baby for days. But it was the right decision. Sending you hugs.

I had to make that decision recently so I know the heartache you're feeling. When it's time, you'll just know, and no one else can tell you. It will be a painful day. Bless your kind heart!

It is just so darn hard when we have to say goodbye to our sweet pets. We just had to put our dog done last month. We had him for 13 plus years. I'm still having crying spells every now and then. When I knew that time was getting close, I tried to spend a lot of time with him and give him lots of love. That's all you can do, hugs...Mindy

Our cat was about 21 years old and suffering from kidney failure. Our vet told us that we would know when the time came to put him down. One morning out sweet cat let out a terrible howl (I guess that would be the word to describe it) and that I figured was the sign I needed to know that the time had come.

As long as she is not in pain, I think it is OK to let them live.

I've had many cats through out my life and it never gets easy to say goodbye. They will tell you that they don't feel like carrying on. My latest kitty that we had put down was partially blind for about a month and then one day I found her curled up and howling in pain. That night I rushed her to the 24 hour vet and had her put to sleep. She was 15 years old. It was terrible seeing her in so much pain. Hope you don't have to go through something like that. You have a very special kitty there. Love the mustache!

Playing a little catch-up here, Roberta - and don't worry, I'll try to do it "quietly" and not post bunches of overdue comments on past posts, but this one I had to comment on.... Not because I have any "answers," but because I wanted you to know I feel your agony....and hope and pray you find some peace in whatever decision you make. My last kitty lived to be 21 years old....Like your "Cookie," in his later years, he wasn't the cat he used to be, but I loved him so. He took to letting out these blood-curdling "meow-howls" all night long, and had bouts of diarrhea and became skinny as a rail. I had taken him to the vet, but that usually ended up being more traumatic than the underlying symptoms. We finally made the decision to put him down...and I made my husband take him because I just couldn't. Oh how I regret that I wasn't there with him....I think I knew it was time, but I wish I had been stronger for his sake.... Keeping you (and Cookie) in thought and prayer - Robin (PS - Your Jacks are adorable!!)

our cat was 15. she had developed lung cancer (we thought at first she had cat asthma). she started finding small, dark places to hide, then stopped eating and cleaning herself. I don't think she could speak anymore, so she didn't cry, although she purred when you held her. We took her to the vet and within an hour she passed away. they do tell you in their own way. Sending you good thoughts.
